Job Description:
Calpine Corporation is helping meet the needs of an economy that demands more and cleaner sources of electricity. Founded in 1984, Calpine is a major North American power company, capable of delivering nearly 24,000 megawatts of clean, reliable and fuel-efficient electricity to customers and communities in 18 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces. Calpine owns, leases and operates integrated systems of fuel-efficient natural gas-fired and renewable geothermal power plants.

The Senior Project Manager will support Calpine's Business Practice Management program for both process improvement management and project management projects across all business units; focusing specifically on cross-functional type projects. These engagements could vary from business and process evaluations to detailed process design, process improvement efforts and large project implementations. In this position, the incumbent must be able to work independently, with limited direction to identify, research, analyze, manage and resolve complex problems. Over the course of the projects, the Senior Project Manager will play a role in identifying and managing issues/opportunities, forming hypotheses, designing and conducting analysis, structuring work plans, synthesizing conclusions, making recommendations, and implementing the change or project work for the project team.

The incumbent will review best practices, processes, and/or systems, provide detailed, fact-based analysis of the current state, and develop alternative approaches for the future state by building business cases for implementation and facilitating the implementation of change. In addition, this position requires the incumbent's ability to analyze, plan, and consult throughout the project by providing process improvement and project management methodologies to each project they are leading. He/she will serve as a subject matter expert, applying functional knowledge to the design and customization of processes and workflow systems to provide seamless integration of projects, programs and/or systems; defines and writes detailed functional requirements, analyzes business needs, validates solutions, develops plans and works with project teams to resolve issues. TheSenior ProjectManager manages project goals, deliverables and team members over the course of 3-4 large scale projects per year, with financial and measurable results greater than $50,000 or a budget of $100,000.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Process/Project Management

    1. Manage and facilitate multiple projects and process improvement initiatives; engaging business leaders, process owners and teams. Serves as liaison between managers, and adjudicating disagreements on approach to ensure an integrated focus for the overall project.
    2. Clearly communicates vision for project success and translates vision into actionable plans. Ensures linkage of projects to the organization's business plan and challenges management appropriately on project scope. Actively supports project identification and selection process.
    3. Defines and quantifies specific cost savings opportunities from instituting process or project changes. Collaborates with subject matter experts and process owners to ensure all design requirements adequately reflect the defined business processes and fully support all components of the functional business requirements.
    4. Serves as a change agent to drive company culture that instills focus on continuous improvement and customer satisfaction through the use of Lean Six Sigma and Project Management methodologies.
    5. Motivates and influences team towards successful and timely project completion. Creates a winning atmosphere with Executive Sponsors and project teams.
    6. Works to remove barriers to project and team success. Pro-actively navigates ambiguity and complexity across business and functional units. Leverage corporate capabilities to improve project results.
    7. Assist Leadership in identifying and prioritizing projects that will provide optimum benefits to Calpine.
    8. Provide training and education to Calpine employees on the principals and techniques of Lean Six Sigma and Project Management.

Special Skills and Knowledge:

    1. Eight plus years of practical delivery experience in project management and process improvement. Completion of fifteen plus projects with demonstrated success and financial results.

    2. Strong technical competency in project management and process improvement methodologies (such as Six Sigma, Kaizen, PMBOK/Project Management), along with effective change management skills.

    3. Ability to show results such as reduction of cycle time, defect reduction, improved customer satisfaction and return on investment.

    4. Strong leadership skills with proven ability to successfully manage and facilitate cross-functional teams; ability to build strong working relationships and work with all levels of an organization.

    5. High energy self starter; must be able to take the initiative with minimal guidance and be comfortable working both as a project lead and as part of a team.

    6. Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation and facilitation skills.

    7. Proficient Microsoft Office, MS Project, MS Visio; process design and simulation tools (iGrafix); and statistical analysis tools (Minitab, SigmaXL, SPCXL).

Requirements and Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Business required. MBA or Masters degree preferred.
    • Five plus years direct Project Management experience.
    • Five plus years direct Six Sigma/Process Improvement experience preferred.
    • Three plus years leadership experience required.
    • Formal Project Management (PMP) and / or Process Improvement (Six Sigma Black Belt) certification required.
    • Energy industry experience, with specific experience in electric power generation industry helpful.
